This original cutout is inspired by the Amate Paper Cutouts of Indigenous Mexicans. Designs were cut out of a mashed bark paper—amatl in Nahuatl, amate in Spanish—and used in rituals to represent spirits and deities. Today the tradition is continued by the Otomi people from villages around San Pablito, Puebla in Mexico.
